Lithuanian society has never denied that certain number of Lithuanians, either encouraged by Nazi or on their own, participated in the massacre fo Jews. The author is concerned only about the holocaust figures. He attempts to find out how many Lithuanian Jews were killed or at least how many Jews were murdered in the teritory of Lithuania. More than 50 years have passed since holocaust but the exact figures are still unavailable. Different figures could be found in scientific studies, periodicals, Soviet-time official document, propaganda studies and even in comments of documents. More over these figures tend to increase. It is very characteristic for the studies published abroad were, as a rule, no references are given.
With the reference to the archives statistics the author states that 209 070 Jews (7.2% of all population) lived in Lithuania on July 1, 1940. This information has not been used yet. With the data given the author tries to reveal the real numerical expression of holocaust without giving a deeper thought on fluctuation of these figures. |
