Dieses Problem ist deshalb aktuell, weil bisher weder die polnische Historiographie, noch die litauische die Persönlichkeit von Władysław Zawadzki im ausreichenden Maße beachtet hat. Seine politische Tätigkeit in Vilnius während des 1. Weltkrieges bleibt bisher in vielen Aspekten unbekannt. Einige Informationen dazu liefern in ihren Schriften die polnischen Historiker W. Sukiennicki, J. Jurkiewicz und P. Wandycz.

Als Hauptquelle dienten die in der Abteilung für Handschriften der Bibliothek der Litauischen Akademie der Wissenschaften aufbewahrten Archivalien. Einige von Władysław Zawadzki verfasste Denkschriften liegen in maschinenschriftlicher Form, redigiert und nicht völlig ausgearbeitet vor. Władysław Zawadzki verfasste sie im Auftrag des Polnischen Ausschusses. Obwohl sie die allgemeine Position aller Mitglieder des Ausschusses zum Ausdruck bringen, kann man voraussetzen, dass sich darin auch die Denkweise von Władysław Zawadzki widerspiegelt. Aus diesem Grunde ist es wichtig, die Forschungen in dieser Richtung und zwar unter Einbezug weiterer Materialien fortzusetzen. Dies würde bei der Klärung nicht nur der Ansichten von Władysław Zawadzki, sondern auch der Position und des Einflusses anderer polnischer Politiker aus Vilnius im Polnischen Ausschuss zu der Zeit, wo sich der Antagonismus zwischen den Litauern und den Polen verschärfte, von Hilfe sein.

The issue of the future of the Lithuanian politics in the memorials of the Polish Committee in Vilnius during the period from 1916 to 1917

Summary

The article analyses the significance of the factor of an individual in the activities of the political organization. The focus is laid on the Polish Committee in Vilnius set up at the beginning of 1916 from various Polish political parties and organizations. The main issue is the political memorials written by a famous Polish economist and politician Władysław Zawadzki during World War I, which should reflect the position of the Polish Committee concerning the future of Lithuania and demonstrate to the German occupation authority the potential of political and social layers of the Lithuanian Poles and the importance in solving the future problems of this country.

This problem is significant since so far neither Polish nor Lithuanian historiography did not pay greater attention to Władysław Zawadzki. His political activities in Vilnius during World War I still remain a secret in many aspects. Polish historians – W. Sukiennicki, J. Jurkiewicz and R. Wapiński – present some facts in their works.

The main source of this article is archival material from the Manuscript Department of the Lithuanian Science Academy Library. Some memorials, written by W. Zawadzki, are of the form of a typescript, unfinished and corrected. W. Zawadzki wrote them by the order of the Polish Committee. Although they expressed general position of all members of the Committee, we can presume that they also reflected particularity of W. Zawadzki’s political thought. Therefore, it is very important that research of these issues is continued while analysing new sources as well. That would help to reveal not only W. Zawadzki’s attitude but also the attitude of other famous Vilnius Polish politicians and their influence in the Polish Committee during the period of growing antagonism between the Lithuanians and the Poles.
